SDN and NFV Dynamic Operation of LTE EPC Gateways for Time-Varying Traffic Patterns

چکیده
The introduction of Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) and Software Defined Networking (SDN) to mobile networks allows operators to control and dimension their network resources with higher granularity and on a more fine-grained time scale. This dynamic operation allows operators to save costs reacting to the rapid growth of traffic and user demands. In this paper, we model and analyze a realization of the mobile core network as virtualized software instances running in datacenters (DC) and SDN transport network elements (NE), with respect to time-varying traffic demands. It is our objective to determine the datacenters placement that achieves the minimum transport network load considering time-varying traffic and under a data-plane delay budget. A second objective is to achieve power savings considering the variation of traffic over time using the available datacenter resources or by acquiring additional resources.

Proposal and evaluation of SDN-based mobile packet core networks
Recently, several researchers have proposed adopting software-defined networking (SDN) concepts for mobile network architectures, particularly for LTE-evolved packet core (LTE/EPC). Although several new designs have been introduced for architectures based on SDN or its concrete realization, Openflow, few studies have presented in-depth discussions of real procedures that are relevant to such ar...
متن کاملHierarchical NFV Datacenters : Resource Allocation with Cost - Latency Tradeoff
Network Function Virtualization (NFV) allows datacenters to consolidate network appliance functions onto commodity servers and devices. Currently telecommunication carriers are re-architecting their central offices as NFV datacenters that, along with Software-Defined Networking (SDN), help network service providers to speed deployment and reduce cost. However, it is still unclear how a carrier ...
متن کاملSDN and Optical Flow Steering for Network Function Virtualization
Introduction Middlebox traffic steering, the capability of routing traffic through different sequences of middleboxes, has been a popular application in software-define networks (SDN) [5]. In this work, we focus on network function virtualization (NFV) [2][3], especially on core virtualized network functions that process high-volume traffic, such as session border controllers (SBCs) and serving...
متن کاملReducing Latency in African Nrens Using Performance-based Lisp/sdn Traffic Engineering
Active topology measurements on the African Internet have showed that over 75% of the intraAfrica traffic destined for Africa's National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) uses intercontinental links, resulting in high latencies and data transmission costs. The goal of this work is to investigate how latency-based path selection using Locator/Identifier Separation Protocol (LISP) and Softw...

Introduction The evolutionary change of telecommunications networks towards all-IP mechanisms has begun to collapse the traditional boundaries between IT infrastructure and telecommunications infrastructure. The IT datacenter has for years been the location for web-based services and applications. As the telecommunications environment has moved to all-IP, more and more of the functions of the n...
